I believe a classroom needs to be a safe space for children to share and explore. I really like the idea that teachers must take time to build trust with their students. In this way, students will gain the confidence they need to step out of their Zone of Proximal Development and take new risks. As a teacher, I will strive to know each of my students as individuals, to learn about their interests. I will tailor classroom activities according to the individual needs and interests as much as possible.
In addition to this, I hope to create a warm, caring classroom environment where all children can feel welcome. As much as possible, I will strive to incorporate my students' ideas and work into the classroom environment so that they can feel a sense of ownership within this space.
I believe children deserve to have teachers and adults in their lives who listen to and respect them. It important to recognize and affirm the innate knowledge and wisdom that children possess. We can learn a lot from the observations of children. In addition to this, I believe that all children deserve to have access to the best education possible. This is not done through standardized tests and curriculum, but rather through dedicated teachers who are willing to try various avenues of learning in addition to following up with students to see if they truly understand the task at hand.
I believe classrooms are laboratories for learning. It is therefore necessary to provide tools for exploration, discussion and discovery. One-sided, teacher centered lecturing and learning can be counterproductive, particularly in the Early Childhood/ECE classroom. In a time where classrooms and curriculum seem more controlled than ever, it is important for teachers to develop an environment where all students can benefit and learn.
